Read about Camp Directors Ben & Grace and the Camp David Uganda report!
Camp David Uganda had their fifth summer of camp last week. The camp served 75 children of prisoners and an additional 25 alumni campers served as counselors and support staff! As we listened to the staff sharing what God did in the children’s lives, Grace and I cried. God is such a good good Father.
While most of the alumni campers were baptized in previous summers, the team was excited that there were eight new students that trusted Jesus as their Savior and wanted to be baptized. When they pulled out the 5 year old blow up pool for baptisms, the director Marjorie’s heart sank. It had a large rip. She showed Pastor Brian her dilemma. The situation looked hopeless but Brian and the Panther team went to work and two hours later they were ready for baptisms.
The children really grasped the theme of taking every thought captive. Throughout each day of camp you could hear campers yelling out to other campers and staff, “That’s the dragon of isolation…that’s the dragon of hopelessness you need to take it captive with the truth.” Several of the new staff this year could not say enough about the love and joy that permeated all the activities at camp. While it rained all week in the nearby city of Kampala, it only rained once during the entire week of camp. That was the gentle drizzle right before the baptism. The rain has happened at every camp baptism since we began. It gives everyone a feeling of Papa God’s special presence for the event.
This is your ministry and you share in the eternal reward of all the children who were touched with the love of Christ this week of camp. On behalf of all the children and staff I want to say thanks for making this possible.
Children of prisoners are likely the most vulnerable children alive today. But their parents' sentences don't have to be theirs. We have found a week of camp can be a life changing experience, as these children find their true identity and discover that they are never alone.
